Each swimmer's recruiting score is calculated using a proprietary formula. This formula reflects both the needs of college coaches and the relative strength of each recruiting class.
Can You Tell Me the Formula?
No. While the exact formula is proprietary. we can tell you a bit about how it works. First, we assign a point value to each of your swims. Then we pick your five best events, assign weights to them and calculate an average of them.
How are Points Assigned?
Points are calculated on the basis of the ACTUAL time needed to qualify for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships.
How are Events Selected?
After points are selected for each event we select your five highest-scoring unique events. If you have best times for the same events over different courses we will select the course with the most events. In other words, we won't use your 200 SCY Freestyle, 200 SCM Freestyle and 200 LCM Freestyle. We will select the best of the three.
How are Events Weighted?
Once selected, each event is given a weight. This is based on both the likelihood that a swimmer will be competing in that event in college and the ease of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in a given year.
Event #1 - 100%
Event #2 - 100%
Event #3 - 60-75%
Event #4 - 20-30%
Event #5 - 10-20%
What About Relays?
We also calculate your best 50 or 100 Freestyle into the equation. This is because of the impact of the freestyle relays in team scores. We opt not to calculate 50 of strokes because of lack of data in the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly (relative to other events) and also because each team only has one spot to fill for each stroke in these events (compared to four for the free relays).
